You most likely use cloud-based services and software every single day, maybe without even knowing it. LinkedIn. Gmail. Evernote. Box. Office 365. Google Docs. Work with at least one of these lately?

Saying that something is cloud-based is the term that has been adopted to say that the software or platform that you’re using runs on software and data stored on remote servers rather than on your computer as a local application.

Cloud-computing has taken all of the positives of an external hard drive and pushed them one step further. Capacity is no longer an issue when you’re working with cloud-based software. When you stop and think about it, the adoption of cloud-based software by local government entities—many of which have been using outdated local applications for years—shouldn’t be surprising. A general evolution toward greater efficiency has been underway for several years. In fact, according to the 2014 State CIO Survey, 86.1 percent of those surveyed, were looking to use an “application running on a cloud infrastructure environment” within the next year.

“The next generation of technology tools is already here. So are the engaged young people who want to use them. Now we need to connect them to each other, and to our government, to create high-flying solutions that will change how we live, learn, heal, play, protect, work, commute, and communicate,” wrote Sonal Shah, Stephen Ondra, and Peter Levin, technology and innovation experts, in an article published on Forbes titled “Let’s use Data and Tech to Create a Government That Works.”

Cloud-computing is an unstoppable force. It’s not really a matter of whether or not you’ll adopt cloud-based software, but whether your agency will be part of the early-adopters on the innovation curve.
